Eat Your Lemons

A very famous saying suggests that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Lemons have a tangy taste, so I understand why this recommendation for a lemonade exists. At least, one can have a balance of sweetness and acidity in one drink.

Some people argue that life can be somewhat predictable, others swear that this is impossible. Whichever side of the divide you choose, the fact remains that life happens whether planned or unplanned.

When life gives us the tangy taste, and if you are anything like me, our first response is to run, hide, internalize, sulk, etc. The urge to eat the life lemons or even go through the process of making a lemonade usually kicks in from a few minutes to a few weeks or even months (maybe years, who knows). We need time to process situations and determine the best way to handle them.

However, the challenge is that sometimes we stew on the personal time so much that it becomes procrastination or avoidance while the problem continues to grow. Sometimes, we spend a lot of time sulking about the situation and doing absolutely nothing about it. I have had my struggles with this too. Here are somethings I try to do when I remember.

1. Accept the Situation: Acknowledge the problem or difficulty I am facing. Acceptance is my first step in dealing with any challenge.
2. Change my Perspective: I try to view the situation from a different angle. I look for any potential benefits or lessons that could come from the difficulty.
3. Focus on Solutions: Instead of dwelling on the problem, I brainstorm ways to address it. I think about what actions I can take to improve the situation.
4. Seek Support: I reach out to friends, family, or professionals for advice or assistance depending on the nature of the lemon. Support from others can provide new insights and encouragement. I have people I turn to depending on what I am dealing with. I find strength in being vulnerable within my safe support community.
5. Learn and Grow: I use the experience as an opportunity for my personal growth. I reflect on what I have learned and how I can apply these lessons in the future.
6. Stay Positive: Maintaining a positive attitude helps me stay motivated, focused and resilient. It helps me become creative with solutions to the problem.
7. Act: This is probably my most important point. I implement the solutions I have come up with. Taking proactive steps, even if they seem small, helps me feel empowered.
8. Celebrate Small Wins: I acknowledge and celebrate my progress, no matter how small. I literally walk on skies when I make small wins.

Life will happen no matter how well we assess risks around us. How we choose to respond is a far more important action that creates the path to recovery.

No matter what life throws at you from hereon, eat your lemons or make the best lemonade. You’ve got this. hashtag
